Frequently Asked Questions
Here you will find answers to the most common questions about our services, processes, and how everything works. Our goal is to provide you with clear and quick information to resolve your doubts and help you make the best decision.
1. What is degree equivalency in the United States?
It is the process by which a specialized agency in the United States evaluates the academic record and degree obtained at Universidad ECOTEC to determine its equivalency within the U.S. educational system.
Generally, an ECOTEC undergraduate degree is recognized as a Bachelor’s Degree (a 4-year university degree).
2. What is the purpose of obtaining this equivalency?
This certificate is essential for:
Continuing education: applying to master’s or doctoral programs at U.S. universities.
Professional employment: presenting credentials to U.S. employers who require a university degree.
Immigration processes: meeting requirements for work visas or employment-based residency.
3. Is ECOTEC an eligible institution for this process?
Yes. As an accredited university recognized by Ecuadorian regulatory bodies (CES and SENESCYT), its degrees meet the necessary standards to be evaluated by credential evaluation agencies in the United States.
4. What is NACES and why is it important?
NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) is the organization that brings together the most recognized and accepted credential evaluation agencies in the United States.
Choosing a NACES member agency (such as Josef Silny & Associates) ensures that the evaluation will be valid and widely accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities.
5. What is the difference between a Dual Degree and Degree Equivalency?
-
Dual Degree (San Ignacio University):
The student directly obtains a U.S. degree while studying at ECOTEC. It does not require additional validation, as the degree is issued in the United States. -
Degree Equivalency:
It is a process carried out by ECOTEC graduates (who did not pursue a dual degree) to have their Ecuadorian degree recognized as equivalent in the United States through an external evaluation.
6. What documents are required to start the process?
- Undergraduate degree (translated into English)
- Academic record / transcripts (courses and grades, translated into English)
- Copy of passport
7. How long does it take to obtain the equivalency?
Once the agency receives all the documentation, the process usually takes between 2 and 3 months.
8. What is the cost of the process?
A “course-by-course” evaluation (the most comprehensive type) costs $750 USD.
9. Does the academic average (GPA) change during the validation process?
Yes. Agencies convert ECOTEC’s grading scale to the U.S. 4.0 GPA scale, allowing universities and employers to interpret academic performance according to their own standards.
10. Which ECOTEC office should I contact to start the process?
The student should contact the International Relations Office, where they will receive the necessary guidance to start the process.
